dp_accent-furnitureWhat is the first thing that pops in your mind when you hear the words “home improvement”? For most, it’s the vision of costly remodeling and renovation projects, especially of the kitchen, bathroom, living room, and bedroom areas. The thing is, such thoughts are difficult to realize unless you have great, stable income. That’s why a lot of people deem renovations impossible. What they don’t know and what you should know is that there’s an easy way to improve your home without spending thousands of bucks.

Origin and Benefits of Accent Furniture

Home improvement is all about “upgrading” one’s home. This includes replacing old features and adding new ones. For example, most living room renovations involve enlarging space and upgrading flooring. This type of home improvement project, even under a strict budget, will still cost one to three thousand dollars at the least. However, the end goal—which is larger space and better-looking flooring in the given sample—can be achieved using accent furniture. How is that possible?

Accent furniture are created with three specific purposes in mind:

  • Compliment existing décor and subsequently beautify homes
  • Answer the need for versatility and more space
  • Provide an affordable alternative to home renovations and remodeling

Let us elaborate on the above purposes to see how useful accent décor can be and why you should consider pursuing them over expensive remodeling projects:

Compliment decors and subsequently beautify homes. Accent home décor are made with elegant designs and durable material. The most popular ones are made with wood, but they are also available in metal and plastic. Although accent furniture brings chairs, tables, and cabinets to mind, there are other accent décor you can use such as modern rugs, folding screens, and lamps among others.

Perhaps the best thing about this accent home furniture, though, is that you are given a wide range of options including the following:

  • Classic furniture, which often comes in monotone, varnished wood
  • Modern furniture, which come in sleek designs and are made with metal or plastic
  • Painted furniture, which provides a more personalized touch

Answer the need for versatility and more space. Due to their beauty, accent pieces are often seen as mere decorations. However, that is certainly a misconception. Accent tables, chairs, and cabinets are not paintings or sculptures that are only meant for the eyes to feast on. They are meant to be used and are often created with dual purposes. For example, there are stacking or nesting accent tables, which are used like normal ones. When not needed, you can easily stack them to minimize the space they eat in your room, so to say. Numerous accent chairs, benches, and ottomans are also created with storage boxes and spaces you can utilize for organization and saving space.

Provide an affordable alternative to home renovations and remodeling. Earlier, we discussed the average cost of a small-scale living room renovation. While some might think that several thousand dollars is affordable, for most, such a cost will burn a big, irreparable hole not only in the pocket but also in the savings. By using home accents, regardless if your choice is simple, modern rugs or classy storage chairs, you can kill three birds with one stone: you can upgrade your home’s beauty, maximize room space, and still have enough dough left in your pocket for other ventures you might have in mind.

fix-scratch-wood-tableIf you’re like most people, you take an inventory of the various pieces of furniture you have in your home from time to time. Think about your accent tables. You may look at them and ask ‘do they still fit with the décor style you are moving towards in the house?’ Are they still sturdy enough to do their job? Are there any dents, dings or stains that are making them unsightly?

While some of these things have definite answers that you can’t do anything about, there are others that you do have a little control over – like the scratches and stains.

Let’s start with scratches.

For the most part, scratches on accent furniture tables are small and come from something as simple as a person’s ring sliding across the surface of the table. In this case all you need to do is likely look in your pen and marker drawer, find a color that is very close to your table and color in the scratch. You may want to use a cloth to rub the ink in to make it blend in a little more.

If you’re really lucky, you may even have some stain that’s the same color as your accent tables in the garage, a little dab of that, rubbed in with a cloth, and the table will look as good as new.

The most common stains that are spotted on accent tables are water stains. As soon as someone in the house has a glass in their hand, all of your accent tables and the rest of your furniture are in harms way.

It seems many people don’t think about the condensation that is building on the outside of their glasses when they set them down on your furniture. Perhaps they live in a home with only plastic furniture. Whatever the reason, they don’t think about the fact that the condensation on that glass is going to go down, thanks to gravity, and try to sink into your wood tabletops.

The longer their glass is there, and still condensing, the worse that white ring is going to be once they move the glass. To think, all of this could have been avoided if they just used a coaster. Now it’s too late. Or maybe not.

The key to getting rid of water stains on your accent tables is to be patient. You need to let the spot completely dry before you try to fix it. If you act too quickly, you could seal water in the wood, which is only going to make matters worse in the long run.

Once you are sure the spot has completely dried, you need to go to the fridge and get some mayonnaise. Yes, you read that right, mayonnaise. The important thing is to make sure you have real mayonnaise, not some of those other items. Use a soft cloth and rub the mayonnaise into the wooden table top. The oil from the mayonnaise will sink into the wood and nourish it, making it look new again.
